Snowy Owl
Snowy Owl OiledIn November 2009, WRS received a call about a Snowy Owl that had been oiled. It is rare for raptors to get oiled, and we are unsure of how this owl did. This was not the first oiled raptor at WRS, another Snowy Owl, a Great Horned Owl, and a Rough-legged Hawk have been brought to the shelter in the past two years.

Each animal that comes to the shelter is examined and the examination of this Snowy Owl revealed how healthy she was, despite being oiled. Much of this is due to the quick response of the people who found her and called WRS.

Since she was healthy enough to be washed, Animal Care Manager, Stephanie, made the decision for her to be washed the next day. Preparing and then washing an oiled animal can take hours so an email was sent to volunteers asking if any would be able to come to the shelter and feed the other animals and then help with the wash.

Washing the owlIt never ceases to surprise us the great response we have from volunteers when calls for help are sent out. We truly appreciate everyone's support and a big thank you goes to Donna, Leanne and Tara who helped with the first wash. The Snowy Owl was washed a second time and a big thank you goes to Jolene and Meaghan who helped.

After the second wash the Snowy Owl showed a much stronger improvement and shortly afterwards she was transferred to an outdoor flight pen. In the flight pen she was able to acclimatize to the weather and condition her muscles for release.

On January 8th, 2010 this female Snowy Owl was released by Lyndsay Dunbrook who is an AHT at Mayfield Animal Hospital. The vet clinic rose over $600 for WRS' annual Run/Walk Wild for Wildlife in 2009.

Video of the Snowy Owl's release can be seen on the Edmonton Journal website.
